Please, a show of hands

May 13, 2011

One of my editors is pitching me as a divorce blogger at her magazine. Though the money wouldn’t be colossal, it would be REGULAR INCOME, which would make a great deal of difference to my life. I would write one short piece per week for them, and though I wouldn’t be allowed to swear (I have already been strictly admonished!) I would be able to write whatever I liked, or whatever YOU liked, which is always a joy to contemplate. I would still write here, and at Babble. I would actually be able to write more here, and at Babble, because not having to hustle for assignments quite as much would free up some time.

I am sending them a list of ideas for entries on Monday–she just wrote me to ask for the pitch today. And it occurred to me that it would be lovely if I could show her bosses some proof that I will bring my own readers to their website–though it is quite baffling to me that the big fish, as it were, are interested in guppies like me. We’re at a turning point for online writing, I think. Websites are starting to realize that they have to pay their writers something if they want halfway decent content, and as more and more print magazines add online components, they’re scrambling to find people willing to write for peanuts on their sites.

Would you mind just leaving a comment–“Yes” is perfectly sufficient–if you think you would read me at yet another website? If you tweet, will you pass it on? I will keep you posted, and I am very grateful for your help. (I have no idea if this will make any difference to the powers in charge, but it might.)

Thank you in advance, very much.
